TelescopeSetup.com exists to answer one question honestly: what should you actually buy, and what will it actually show you. That sounds simple, and most telescope buying advice fails at it in two specific ways, which is why this site was built.
The two claims this site is built on
The mount matters more than the telescope. A cheap department store telescope on a wobbly tripod is the single most common reason beginners give up on astronomy. At 150x a tremor of a fraction of a millimetre becomes a visible jump, and a mount at its limit takes five or ten seconds to settle after every focus adjustment. Aperture is what the marketing sells and steadiness is what decides whether you use the thing. Most of our recommendations put steadiness first, which is why two of our three complete builds are Dobsonians.
A telescope will not show you the colours in a photograph. Human night vision runs on rod cells, which are close to monochrome, so the Orion Nebula appears as grey-green mist and galaxies as faint grey ovals at any aperture. Photographs are hours of stacked exposure through a camera. Setting that expectation before somebody spends money is the difference between a hobby and a cupboard ornament, and almost nobody selling telescopes has any incentive to say it.
How recommendations are made
Three sources, in this order. Published manufacturer specifications, taken from the maker rather than from a retailer listing. Optical figures we can verify by calculation, which in astronomy covers a great deal: magnification, exit pupil, true field, focal ratio, the Dawes resolution limit and maximum useful magnification are all derivable from aperture and focal length, so they can be checked rather than trusted. And reports from owners who have used the equipment under real skies, weighted toward the specific and away from the enthusiastic.
We do not test equipment in person, and we never claim to. Any site telling you it hands-on tested forty telescopes is telling you a story. What we can do, and do, is get the arithmetic right, name the trade-offs plainly, and say when the cheaper option is the better one.

A note on missing numbers
In the telescope spec database you will see rows that are simply absent rather than filled with an estimate. That is deliberate. Where a manufacturer does not publish an unambiguous figure, particularly for weight, where "shipping weight" and "assembled weight" often differ by ten pounds, the row is omitted. This audience owns the equipment and will check, and one invented figure would undermine the other forty. Focal ratio, maximum useful magnification and the Dawes limit are always calculated from aperture and focal length rather than copied, so those three can never disagree with each other.
Solar safety is not a disclaimer here
This is the one hobby where a single mistake causes permanent blindness in under a second. Never point a telescope, finder or binocular at the Sun without a certified full-aperture solar filter fitted over the front of the instrument. Filters that thread onto an eyepiece sit at the focus, where all the collected heat is concentrated, and can crack while you are looking through them. Every page on this site that touches solar observing carries that warning prominently, and it appears in the footer of every page as well.
How the site is funded
Through Amazon affiliate links. If you buy something after clicking one, we earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That funding model creates an obvious incentive to recommend expensive things, and the way we handle it is structural rather than promised: every roundup presents three tiers, every expert tier carries an explicit note about who should not buy it, and several pages actively argue for spending less. A large share of serious telescope equipment sells through specialist dealers such as High Point Scientific, Agena and OPT rather than through Amazon. Where that is true, we link to a scoped Amazon search rather than fabricating a product listing, and we say so on the page. A search link is honest. A wrong link earns nothing and sends you to the wrong product.
Corrections
If a figure here is wrong, we want to know, and specifically: astronomy has a lot of numbers that get repeated without being checked. If you find one, send it through the contact page with the source and it gets fixed. The same goes for any internal link that lands somewhere it should not.
