Three things stand out in that table. Which build should you buy?

Buy the beginner build if

You have never owned a telescope, your storage is a cupboard rather than a garage, or your budget is genuinely fixed. A 130 mm tabletop Dobsonian that lives by the back door and goes outside weekly will show you far more over a year than an 8 inch that lives in a loft and goes outside twice. Aperture only counts if the telescope actually gets used, and that is not a consolation, it is arithmetic.

Buy the intermediate build if

You have somewhere at ground level for a 48 lb telescope and no staircase between it and the sky. An 8 inch Dobsonian resolves globular clusters into individual stars, shows the Cassini division on an average night and reaches most of the Messier catalogue from a suburban garden. It is the most a human eye can see per dollar spent, and it is the tier most experienced observers actually use.

Buy the expert build only if

Deep sky photography specifically is the goal, you have already spent a season observing visually, and you have a repeatable place to set up. It produces images that no visual telescope can show, and it spends most of its night showing you a tablet rather than the sky. The expert build page opens with a list of five situations in which you should not buy it, and that list is not a formality.

What is on every list regardless of budget?

Five things appear in all three builds, and each one is there because leaving it out is a common reason people stop observing.

  • A red light. Dark adaptation takes twenty to thirty minutes and is worth roughly a magnitude of reach. One glance at a white screen resets the clock. A red torch costs about thirteen dollars and changes what you see all night.
  • A certified full-aperture solar filter. Cheap, and the one item on the list where the alternative is permanent blindness.
  • A wide field eyepiece. The one you actually find things with. A 32 mm Plossl gives the widest field a 1.25 inch barrel can physically produce and is the most universally useful eyepiece to own.
  • Something that tells you what is up tonight. A telescope that cannot be aimed stops being used, and this is the cheapest problem on the list to solve.
  • A way to keep the optics dry and covered. Damp is what kills coatings over years, and a warm telescope sealed into a case traps moisture inside the tube.

Two things worth knowing before you spend anything

The mount matters more than the telescope. A cheap department store telescope on a wobbly tripod is the single most common reason beginners give up, because at 150x a tremor of a fraction of a millimetre becomes a visible jump and the image never settles. Every build here puts steadiness ahead of aperture and ahead of magnification, which is why two of the three are Dobsonians: a plywood box has almost nothing to flex. A telescope will not show you colourful nebulae. Human night vision runs on rod cells, which are close to monochrome, so the Orion Nebula appears as grey-green mist and galaxies as faint grey ovals at any aperture. Photographs are hours of stacked exposure. What genuinely looks spectacular through an eyepiece is the Moon at any aperture, the rings of Saturn, the belts and moons of Jupiter, double stars, open clusters and, in eight inches or more, globular clusters resolving into individual points.
