Colour Filters vs No Filters for Planets
Colour filters raise contrast on specific planetary features by suppressing other wavelengths, which can make Martian polar caps or Jovian belts easier to see. They also dim the image, so they need aperture to work with and reward experience. Try filters if you observe planets regularly with a reasonable aperture; skip them if you are still learning to see planetary detail at all.

Frequently asked questions
Which filter for which planet?
Broadly, light blue helps Jovian belts, orange and red help Martian surface markings, and yellow helps Saturn's bands. Effects are subtle and depend heavily on aperture and seeing.
Do filters work on small telescopes?
Less well, because they dim an already faint image. Below about four inches most planetary colour filters give back less than they take.
Is a moon filter necessary?
Not necessary, but the Moon near full is bright enough to be genuinely unpleasant at moderate aperture, and a neutral density filter makes it comfortable rather than changing what you see.
