Dew Shield vs Dew Heater: Stopping Optics Fogging
A dew shield is a passive tube that slows radiative cooling of the corrector or lens, and it is enough on many nights for very little money. A heater band actively keeps the glass a degree or two above the dew point, which is the only thing that works on a genuinely damp night. Fit the shield first; add the heater if sessions still end early with fogged optics.

Why do Schmidt-Cassegrains dew up so badly?
Because the corrector plate sits exposed at the front of the tube and radiates heat straight to the sky. Newtonians have the mirror recessed deep in the tube, which is effectively a built-in dew shield, and refractors sit in between.
Can I just wipe the dew off?
Wiping optics is how coatings get scratched. If dew forms, warm the glass gently with a hairdryer at distance or end the session. Prevention is far easier than recovery.
Does dew damage a telescope?
Not immediately, but repeatedly putting a wet instrument away in a case grows mould on coatings. Let everything dry fully at room temperature before packing it up.
