Red Flashlight vs a Phone in Night Mode
Dark adaptation takes twenty to thirty minutes to build and seconds of white light to destroy. A dimmable red flashlight preserves it; a phone, even with a red filter app, is usually far too bright and one accidental notification undoes the whole night. Buy the red flashlight, and leave the phone in a pocket on its dimmest setting.

Frequently asked questions
How long does dark adaptation take?
Most of the gain comes in the first twenty minutes, with slower improvement for an hour. A single glance at a white light resets much of it, which is why observers are so particular about this.
Are phone red filter apps good enough?
Rarely. Even at minimum brightness most screens are far brighter than needed, and the risk of a notification or the lock screen appearing is constant.
Why red specifically?
Rod cells in the eye, which handle low light vision, are least sensitive to deep red, so red light interferes least with dark adaptation. Dim matters as much as red.
