How to Observe the Sun Safely

Observing the sun requires a certified full-aperture solar filter fitted securely over the FRONT of the telescope, so light is rejected before entering the tube. Filters that screw into the eyepiece sit at the focal point, can crack from concentrated heat, and cause instant permanent blindness. Inspect the filter against a bright lamp before every use and discard it if you find any pinhole.

The Sun is the only object in the sky that can permanently blind you, and it is also the only one you can observe in daylight, watch change day to day, and photograph with modest equipment. Both of those are true at once, which is why the safety rules here are absolute rather than cautious.

Two rules carry almost all the risk. The filter goes on the front of the telescope, and you inspect it before every single use. Everything else on this page is elaboration on those two.

Why does filter position matter so much?

A telescope collects light in proportion to the area of its aperture. An 8 inch telescope has roughly 850 times the collecting area of a dark-adapted human pupil, and it concentrates all of that into a few square millimetres at the focal point.

A filter screwed into the eyepiece sits exactly there, absorbing the full concentrated beam. It gets extremely hot, and it can crack without warning. When it does, the unfiltered beam reaches your retina immediately.

A full-aperture filter clamped over the front rejects roughly 99.999 percent of the sunlight before it enters the tube. Nothing downstream ever sees concentrated light. That is the entire difference, and it is why the two arrangements are not comparable options at different price points. One is safe and the other is not.

What to check before every session

Solar film degrades with handling, and its failure mode is a pinhole you did not notice. The inspection takes twenty seconds and is not optional.

  1. Hold the filter up to a bright household lamp and look through it from the back.
  2. Any pinhole, scratch, crease, bubble, or film separating from its frame means the filter is finished. Replace it. Do not patch it with tape.
  3. Check the fit on the tube. It must be snug enough that it cannot be lifted off by wind or a knock. Many observers tape theirs on as well, and that is sensible rather than paranoid.
  4. Cap or remove the finder scope. An unfiltered finder is exactly as dangerous as the main tube and is a common cause of accidents, because people forget it is there.

How do you aim without looking through it?

You never sight along the tube and never use the finder. Instead, use the telescope's own shadow: watch where it falls on the ground and move the tube until that shadow is as small and as circular as you can make it. When the shadow is minimised, the tube is pointed at the Sun. Only then look through the filtered eyepiece.

Once you find it, start at low magnification. Seeing conditions are usually poor during the day because the ground is radiating heat, so the practical limit is often lower than at night. Early morning is generally steadier than mid afternoon for the same reason.

What can you actually see?

More than people expect, and it changes daily, which is the appeal. In white light you get sunspots with visible umbra and penumbra, granulation across the disc, and faculae near the limb. Sunspots move noticeably as the Sun rotates over roughly 27 days, so a sketch or photo every clear day builds a genuinely interesting record.

Hydrogen alpha is a different instrument and a different view: prominences arcing off the limb, dark filaments across the disc, and flares. It is spectacular and it is expensive, starting near $800 against about $80 for a white light filter. Start with white light.

Buy a filter sized for your specific tube's outside diameter, not its aperture, since the filter clamps over the outside of the tube. Measure before ordering. If you are making one from sheet film, the film must be mounted in a rigid cell that cannot be dislodged, and a loose or taped-on film filter is not an acceptable substitute for a proper frame.

Eclipses, where most accidents happen

Eclipse days produce more eye injuries than the rest of the year combined, for a simple reason: crowds, borrowed equipment and excitement. Two things matter.

ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses are for naked-eye use only. They are not a telescope filter and holding them at an eyepiece will not work. And during a total eclipse, the filter comes off only during totality itself, when the Sun's disc is completely covered, and goes straight back on before the first sliver of the photosphere returns. If you are outside the path of totality, the filter never comes off at all.
