Five situations, and none of them are a formality.

  • Anyone who has not already completed a season with a colour camera. Monochrome adds a filter wheel, three or more exposure sets per target, per filter calibration frames and a colour combination step. Every one of those multiplies problems you have not yet learned to diagnose, and adding them to an unfamiliar workflow is how people end up with a shed full of equipment and no finished images.
  • Anyone whose sky is clear fewer than about thirty nights a year. A mono narrowband target realistically wants fifteen to twenty hours across four or five nights. At thirty clear nights a year, weather and Moon considered, that is a handful of finished images annually. A colour camera would give you three times as many.
  • Anyone without a repeatable place to set up. Carrying an EQ6 class mount out and polar aligning from scratch every session is roughly forty minutes each time. Doing that for a five hour sequence is tolerable. Doing it for a season is what makes people stop.
  • Anyone who does not enjoy processing. At this tier the capture is largely automated and the difference between two people with identical rigs is almost entirely processing skill. If stacking and stretching feel like a chore rather than the interesting part, this build makes the chore three times longer.
  • Anyone hoping this will make imaging easier. It will not. It makes the results better and the process considerably harder, and being clear about that is the whole point of this section.

Why is monochrome the step that defines this tier?

A colour sensor has a Bayer filter over it: a mosaic putting a red, green or blue filter over every individual pixel. Each pixel therefore records one colour and discards the rest of the light landing on it, and the missing values are interpolated from neighbours. That is a convenient arrangement for daylight photography and a wasteful one when the subject is faint.

A monochrome sensor has no Bayer filter, so every pixel records every photon that reaches it at full resolution. Put a red filter in front of the whole sensor and you get a red image using all the pixels rather than a quarter of them. Do that three times and combine.

The second and larger advantage is bandpass control. With mono you choose the filter, which means you can use a 3 or 7 nanometre narrowband filter that passes only the hydrogen alpha line and rejects essentially the entire rest of the spectrum, including all the streetlight. Read the top and bottom rows together. A colour camera under a dark sky finishes a target in one night. Monochrome narrowband takes five, and every one of those nights has to be clear, moonless enough, and one you are available for. That is why this is a commitment to a schedule rather than an equipment purchase, and it is the honest reason most people should stop one tier down.

Why is the telescope still small?

Because the two numbers that decide an imaging telescope are focal ratio and weight, and aperture only enters through them.

The FRA400 is 72 mm at f/5.6. Light per unit of sensor area scales with the inverse square of the focal ratio, so at f/5.6 it reaches a given signal level in about half the exposure time of an f/8 tube. Across a season of narrowband imaging, where a single target already takes five nights, halving the exposure requirement is worth more than any amount of extra aperture.

Weight is the second half. The mount is rated at 44 lb visually, which is about 22 lb for imaging, and this rig weighs roughly 12 lb. What can you skip?

  • The planetary camera. A small fast colour camera is only there so a bright Moon night is still usable. If you never image the Moon or planets, skip it.
  • The dual narrowband filter, if you have committed fully to the mono filter set. The L-eXtreme is there for single night results with the colour camera, which is a genuinely useful fallback rather than a duplicate.
  • The case, if the rig lives permanently assembled under cover.
  • The mains extension and the powered hub, until the first intermittent fault. Both are diagnostic purchases as much as equipment ones.

What is not skippable: the filter wheel, because a monochrome camera without one produces grey images and nothing else; the electronic focuser, because focus drift across a five hour sequence is an invisible quality loss; and the counterweight capacity, because a full imaging train regularly exceeds what the supplied weight can balance and discovering that in the dark ends the night.

What should you upgrade first?
